The Last One Among Us

by Muriel Lherm

A species can still exist and already feel like a memory. Created for The Big Five: Baku Art Weekend 2026 open call, this work reflects on the Caucasian leopard and the fragile space between presence and disappearance. I wanted the animal to feel less like something we observe and more like a presence we are slowly losing. Its changing form becomes a trace, a shadow, a reminder that extinction rarely happens in a single instant. There is a long moment before absence, when something is still here, but already becoming difficult to hold onto. The Last One Among Us is about that moment. About witnessing what remains while there is still time to see it.
