The First Inheritance

The First Inheritance

by Muriel Lherm

Motherhood was my first inheritance. Long before I understood what had been passed down to me, I was already repeating gestures of care, protection and love that had travelled through generations of women. After my mother died, these gestures changed meaning. I began to recognise her inside the way I hold my own children. Perhaps inheritance begins in the body, long before we know we are carrying it.
